In an emergency
Call 112 for police, fire or ambulance. Go to the nearest hospital emergency; all three big government hospitals have 24-hour emergency departments.
The big three
- PGIMER, Sector 12: the region’s main referral hospital for complex cases, cancer, transplants and rare conditions. Very busy, with patients from several states. New patients can register online as well as at the counters.
- GMCH, Sector 32: Government Medical College and Hospital, a large teaching hospital with most specialities.
- GMSH, Sector 16: Government Multi Specialty Hospital, for most everyday specialist care, maternity and emergencies.
Civil hospitals and dispensaries
For routine OPD care, vaccinations and minor problems, start at a civil hospital (for example in Sector 22 or Mani Majra) or your sector’s dispensary. They are less crowded and will refer you on if needed. Browse them in the hospitals and clinics directories.
Tips for an OPD visit
- Arrive early and carry ID, old reports, prescriptions and the medicines you take.
- Keep your hospital registration number; you will need it every visit.
- Ask whether your test can be booked online to avoid a second queue.
Private hospitals
There are many private hospitals and nursing homes in the city and in Mohali and Panchkula. Check whether your health insurance has cashless arrangements with them before planned treatment.
