The V roads: how Chandigarh’s streets are planned

Le Corbusier gave Chandigarh a road system with seven types of road, from fast highways down to footpaths. A cycle track type was added later. Knowing them makes the city much easier to navigate.

The eight V's

  • V1: roads linking Chandigarh to other cities.
  • V2: the big avenues across the city, such as Madhya Marg, Dakshin Marg, Jan Marg, Uttar Marg and Purv Marg, lined with major buildings.
  • V3: fast roads that run between sectors. Houses do not open onto them, which is why sector edges are walled or green.
  • V4: the shopping street that winds through each sector, where the main market is.
  • V5: the loop road that carries traffic around the inside of a sector.
  • V6: the small lanes that reach the houses.
  • V7: footpaths through the green belts and parks.
  • V8: cycle tracks, added later, many running alongside the V2 and V3 roads.

What it means for you

  • To cross the city quickly, stay on V2 and V3 roads and turn into sectors only near your destination.
  • Markets are on the V4 inside each sector, not on the main roads.
  • Roundabouts ("chowks") at most V3 junctions are how sectors meet; they are named by the four sectors around them, for example the 17/18/21/22 roundabout.
  • The V7 and V8 network makes walking and cycling across whole sectors possible without dealing with traffic.
