Property tax and water bills in Chandigarh

Property tax, water supply, sewerage and garbage collection are run by the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh (MC).

Property tax

  • Property tax is charged each financial year (April to March) on residential and commercial buildings.
  • The MC usually offers a rebate for paying early, by the end of May. In 2025 the rebate was 20% for residential property if paid by 31 May.
  • Paying late brings a penalty (in 2025, 25% extra) plus interest. Check the notice the MC publishes each April for this year’s dates and rates.
  • Rates were revised in 2025, so do not assume last year’s bill.
  • Pay online on the MC website or the Sampark portal, or at a Sampark centre.

Water bills

Water is metered and billed by the MC. Pay online or at a Sampark centre. For a new connection, a change of name after buying a house, or a faulty meter, apply to the MC with ownership proof.

Garbage and sanitation

Door-to-door garbage collection is run by the MC with a user charge added to bills. Separate wet and dry waste at home; it is required.

Complaints

Report water leaks, sewer blockages, garbage problems or broken streetlights to the MC through its website, app or helpline. Your local councillor’s office can also follow up.
